This diploma thesis contains bibliography references concerning the historical and sociological development of the ghetto, taking into consideration basic terminology such as that of poverty and social exclusion. The development of societies in the post-industrial era, lead to the increase of population immigration which despite that initially were carrying different societal characteristics, now in a majority of case the population faced social outcast in their host counties. From the widespread structure of the U.S ghetto, to the alterations in the Brazil but in other European countries, the phenomenon of spatial segregation is of high importance, and should be part of fields of research, as it remains unaffected in the passage of time having faced many changes and it seems to be maintained overtime carrying the respective consequences to the modern societies and their outcasts.
