Effects of aerobic exercise in patients with Coronary Artery Disease
Summary:
Introduction: Physical activity plays a significant role in management of coronary artery disease and improvement of quality of life, in programs of cardiac rehabilitation.
Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise in management of coronary artery disease through a systematic review of international literature.
Material and Methods: The database PUBMED was searched by using the appropriate keywords: «coronary artery disease», «cardiac rehabilitation» and «aerobic exercise». The selection criteria for the article search were the following: a) studies published in English language, b) studies in humans and c) studies published in the late 10 years.
Results: From the literature search a total of 1,016 studies were found, 12 of which were finally selected. Most of the studies showed improvement in functional capacity and quality of life among patients with coronary artery disease who followed aerobic training. Also, it was found that the combination of aerobic and resistance exercise leads to a greater improvement in management of coronary artery disease.
Conclusions: Aerobic exercise contributes effectively to management of coronary artery disease and to elimination of cardiovascular risk factors. Therefore, the participation of patients with coronary artery disease in cardiac rehabilitation programs is imperative.
