Summary:
The main point of this essay is the phenomenon of mental retardation under the prospective of the social-economical costs which the patients, their families and the whole society are burdened. This matter requires a thorough research, both on a national and a global level, due to the fact that in the last decade the problem has escalated, primarily because of the shrinkage of the welfare state and the expansion of globalization. The problem of mental retardation is related to poverty coming up limiting the evolution of capability of those people suffering from mental retardation and their families who support them. Due to the fact that direct and indirect costs arise, it is necessary for them to be determined through specific researches and studies. In most cases, the data available are not enough to estimate the costs, suggesting either a degraded signification of the problem or the existence of social stigma. The luck of data, in general, renders treatment of mental retardation more difficult, either through prevention or through healthcare. This deprives people with mental retardation and their families from their right to participate in society on equal terms. The sensitivity and mobility of the wider environment, within which these people live, becomes the most important premise of treating the problem.
