On the nature of Melancholy – A documentation of the main theoretical approaches in european literature
Summary:
This essay deals with the tradition of melancholy and the main approaches of it within the European literature. From the first documentation of melancholy in the Hippocrates’s texts and the doctrine of four humours which defined the evolution of future theories, the pseudo-Aristotle problem xxx,1 which defines melancholy as a feature of special individuals and as a precondition of a higher intellectual creation. Afterwards it refers to the connection during the Middle Ages of melancholy and acedia as a sin, then during Renaissance, the return of the characterisation of melancholy as a feature of the intellectual person and as a source of inspiration, combining it with the Arabic astrology (Kronos’s influence). Then during the period of Baroque, where melancholy coincides with the notion of vanity, the representation of this vanity with the painting movement of “still life”, the monumental work of Robert Burton for melancholy, the psychoanalytical turn with Freud and his introduction of introjection and finally the aesthetic and ethic nuance that Kant has bestowed to melancholy.
