The Athenian Propyla
Summary:
This master thesis studies the propyla of the city of Athens. It presents and analyses
the development of the architectural type called propylon in the urban area of ancient Athens. The thesis focuses on the urban area which consists of the monumental constructions called propyla and the urban gateways both of which are parts of the city plan. The Thesis excludes the Propylaia of the Acropolis, being outside of the city centre, and the arch of Hadrian which is not connected with any building.

The Thesis analyses the development of the architectural form of the propylon in the athenian urban area and it consists of four separate chapters in which the athenian urban propyla are presented from different aspects.

The first chapter discusses the literary sources of the term propylon and propylaea and how the word appears in the ancient writers and the inscriptions.

The second chapter presents all the preserved propyla and gateways of the athenian urban area. The sequence is given based on the chronological evolution. In parallel, the thesis presents all the historical and architectural details.

The architectural composition of the propyla is discussed in the third chapter of the Thesis, where the architectural form of the athenian propyla is investigated. The investigation focuses on different periods and it examines the architectural orders and the frequency of their appearance.

The architectural sculptures in the athenian propyla are presented in the chapter 4 and more specific the document presents the form of the sculptures and how the sculptures are used in the Athenian Propyla. The categories are either as a free standing sculptures decorating the monuments or as a structural part of the building (caryatides).

The architectural orders and their appearance in the athenian propyla is presented during the fifth chapter of the thesis. In this chapter, the athenian propyla are examined according to their order. The doric, the ionic and the corinthian order are examined in the Athenian constructions and compared to examples from Athens and other regions. The comparison of the propyla with older or similar buildings is done so that to understand whether the architectural form is similar with the current tradition or refers to older examples.

The last chapter studies the function and significance of the propyla. Apart from the architectural function of the propylon, the chapter presents examples where a parallel role of the propylon is revealed. Some of the different purposes of the propyla include the sacred and secular role of the buildings, the political role and the use of the prolyla as trophies or victory monuments.
