The history of teaching surgical anatomy
Summary:
Human curiosity has been a driving force in research throughout history. Our innate attraction to the unknown has led humans look for answers to scientific questions. Our anatomical structure was a mystery for many years and could be no exception; curiosity led great scientists of the past to study the human body. The present Thesis aims to revive the journey of the man from the early development of medicine to anatomical science as we know it today. Death, illness and the structure of the humans were explained differently in different historical eras and different methods of transmitting this knowledge to younger colleagues have been tried out.
Anatomy is meant to be taught to young doctors and it encloses death, a human corpse and dissection. It also raises moral and legal issues regarding the processing of the cadaver. For this reason, it is a science of particular difficulties for both the teacher and the student. This Thesis researches medical scripts and papers about ancient India, Greece, Byzantium, the Renaissance and today and attempts to highlight the similarities, differences and developments in the teaching of anatomy, posing questions about teaching in the future.
