Women and work in Greek regions under venetian rule
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the professional involvement of women in the Greek-Venetian East, in the domestic service and in the institutional policy. The examination of these professional activities in a wide time and geographical range was dictated by the material itself and by the intention to examine these professions in their historicity. The raised questions aimed at highlighting the social role of pre-modern women in combination with the biological characteristics of the female sex.
In the first chapter, through the study of notarial deeds (wills, contracts of employment and endowments), the domestic service is examined. The analysis of the domestic service as a professional and social phenomenon allows the profiling of social, economic context in which the causes of supply and demand of such services are interpreted. In the second chapter, the professional involvement of women in the care institutions of abandoned infants as wet nurses and as supervisors (priore) is studied, while with the exploitation of unpublished archival material from the State Archives of Venice ( Archivio di Stato di Venezia), the interest is focused on the example of the institution of Zante. Starting with the infant abandonment, the chapter examines the inclusion of these women in the system of the institutional policy of Venice, and among other things, highlights the complex relations of power which developed into the institutional space between the workers. In addition, starting from the occupation of the position of the supervisor and her assistant by persons with related ties, the chapter studies the establishment of family networks in claiming public positions and answers questions about the social origin of supervisors of hospital institutions.
