Framework of clinical trials in Belgium, Poland and Greece – Comparative assessment and improvement perspectives.
Summary:
Clinical trials are the link between scientific research and clinical practice and even if they require a large budget for their implementation, they constitute direct investments for the conducting country. Thus, clinical trials can promote growth and deliver hundreds of millions of euros in Greece, boosting not only the economy, but also public health and the labor market.
The aim of this thesis is to study and evaluate the Greek reality regarding the context of clinical trials and its comparison with two EU Member States such as Belgium and Poland. In Belgium, according to EFPIA official figures for 2016, more than € 2.5 billion was spent on investment in research and development in the pharmaceutical industry, while according to the same source in Poland, the amount of investment for the same purpose approached almost € 300 million. On the contrary in the context of the above research it is observed that in our country only €50 million are invested in clinical studies per year, making Greece a straggler in pharmaceutical research.
Thus, clinical trials can promote growth and deliver hundreds of millions of euros in Greece, boosting not only the economy, but also public health and the labor market.
It is therefore necessary to identify specific adaptation proposals in order to relieve Greece of the main difficulties faced by all those involved in a clinical trial. These include the harmonization of procedures and the implementation of deadlines by operators, the recruitment of trained staff and, finally, the provision of financial incentives for investments.
