The management of migration flows to EU in relation to the Common Security and Defence Policy. The case of Central and Southern Mediterranean Sea
Summary:
2015 consists a particularly demanding year for the EU illegal immigration flows from the Middle East and Africa. The most commonly used main routes were those of the Central and Eastern Mediterranean. These flows had a result of exerting strong pressure on the host countries of immigrants such as Greece and Italy, which were unable to manage the situation without EU assistance. Pressure from ongoing flows and how they have been addressed by host countries has led to reactions within the Union on issues such as asylum, control within the Schengen countries and the guarding of European borders. Given this situation and the continued publication of unprecedented images and videos of shipwrecks and deaths in the Eastern and Central Mediterranean, the EU announced in May 2015 the European Action Program regarding the better Immigration Management. Within the framework of this program, it was decided actions to be taken both by the European Border Guard and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) and by the European External Action Service under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), in order to reduce migratory flows along the route of Central Mediterranean
