Oral health evaluation of Multiple Sclerosis patients and of the functionality of their prosthetic rehabilitations and correlation with the level of satisfaction. Cross-sectional study.
Summary:
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, autoimmune, inflammatory and demyelinating disease. It constitutes the most frequent neurologic reason of disability for young adults. Beyond the usual signs and symptoms of the disease, patients with MS tend to acquire an oral pathology with a potential negative impact ontheir quality of life. There is specific documentation about MS patients facing difficulties regarding their dental care due to the disease itself and the medication subscribed to the patients. Also, the disease has a negative impact on perceived dental monitoring and on the maintenance of oral health. This effect is magnified by the development of the disease and the reduction of general health and is mainly related to reduced mobility and the inaccessibility to the dental services. Through the review of the literature there was no reference on the kind of dental prosthetic rehabilitation of MS patients. The level of satisfaction coming out of their usage was also purely documented, with was only a few referrals to the use of dentures and partial dentures. There was also no reference on the time the prostheses were constructed regarding to the clinical state of the patients. Another field of the modern Dental Prosthetic Rehabilitation that has not been investigated is the use of the osseointegrated dental implants in MS patients. There are no suggestions or contraindications considering their placement in alveolar crests of MS patients. The purpose of this research study is to record the oral health status and the different kinds of Dental Prosthetic restorations of MS patients and relate the findings with their quality of life, in a representative sample of patients under regular follow-up at the Outpatient Demyelinating Diseases Clinic of the Aeginition Hospital, at the 1st Department of Neurology, of NKUA during one year. The patients have already participated in the general research project about quality of life that is carried out by the scientific team of Dr Maria Anagnostouli. The results of this study and their diffusion are expected to facilitate the way dental practicioners treat this kind of dental population and help to design interventional clinical projects and studies for the efficacy of treating MS Patients, through the collaboration of Neurologists, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Neuropsychologists, Nurses and Dentists.
