Summary:
The purpose of research in this Master dissertation was to investigate the ways in which preschool education children experience an urban park, which is near their school and used as a field for free and and more structured pedagogical activities. Data collection was based on the use of: a) observation, b) the photovoice, and c) interviews with the children. A group of 17 children aged 5 years participated in the study while 4 of them were case-studied.
The pedagogical activities and field study lasted for 7 weeks. The main theoretical construct employed was "Indicators of environmental quality", as proposed by Louise Chawla in 2002, to describe and analyze the relationships developed between children (and young people) within an urban environment. The data consists of field notes and other types of field observations and the interview transcripts, as well as the photographic material created and commented on by the children. The thematic analysis carried out led to the creation of four post-narrative accounts that reflect the researcher's experience from her encounters with the children.
The study provides interesting insights as to the children's experience in and of an urban park, which seems to depend on two factors: a) the presence of a social milieu (family and peers) and b) the physical characteristics of the place. When these two are supported by free or structured activities in the field, the connection of children with nature settings in an urban environment are strengthened and personal meanings are ascribed to them.
