The validity of rubrics for grading primary education greek studies
Summary:
In recent years, thanks to advances of Pedagogical Science and important contributions of Research, new methods of evaluating pupils have been introduced, complementing traditional ways employed over the years. These new methods are not tailored exclusively to Greece, but have a global scope and can be applied to all didactic communities and Education levels. However, frequently teachers remain cautious or adversarial against new evaluation methods either due to ignorance and inadequate information, or because they hesitate to abandon the traditional, tried and tested ways of assessing students.
This thesis focuses on these new methods, and specifically studies the familiarity and confidence of teachers in them and whether conclusions drawn from them are reliable and comparable to those of traditional critical ways of grading written essays in the class of Modern Greek of the final three grades of primary school. This thesis will be based exclusively on the last three grades of elementary schooling, as Primary education pupils are required only in these final three years to develop coherent and sufficiently long written essays.
The assessment method that will be explored in this thesis concerning its validity for grading pupils' written essays is the graded evaluative criteria, commonly known as scoring rubric. The scoring rubric is an objective method of formative assessment and is based on specific criteria that educators have according to the subject they are testing.
Scoring Rublics are a reliable assessment tool and can bring significant improvements to the learning process when proper used by teachers. In this qualitative survey, which will be based on interviews with teachers of three different elementary schools in Elefsina, we will try to clarify whether the rubrics are considered to be reliable and objective for graduating students' essays.
