Prevalence of aggressive behaviours and mental health nurses' attitudes and management of aggressive towards inpatient aggression with psychiatric disorders: Cross sectional study
Summary:
Introduction: Research conducted internationally in mental health nurses reports at least once a physical attack by a patient during their career. Both the short and long term exposure to any form of violence has significant negative effects on staff, patients, their treatment and functioning of the organization.
Aims/ Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the techniques of management of patients with aggressive behavior by mental health nurses as well as to investigate their attitudes.
Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 141 nurses working in mental health structures in Athens, Greece, for the period December 2018 - February 2019. For the collection of research data used self-report questionnaire that included a demographic questionnaire and four even self-assessment scales. In particular, participants completed the Attitudes towards Patient Aggression scale (ATAS), the Perceptions of the Prevalence of Patient Aggression scale (POPAS), the Management of Aggression and Violence Attitude Scale (MAVAS) and the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ)
Results: Mental health nurses stated in percentage 90.8% that have experienced even one type of aggression by patients at their workplace in the previous year. Overall, nurses consider aggression more often as offensive, destructive and intrusive and less likely as a means of communication. The verbal assault was the most common type of aggression while sexual intimidation and suicide attempts were less frequent. The participants expressed their strongest agreement with the idea that the internal factors reinforce the aggressiveness of patients, while as aggression management method declared using medication and physical restraints and had a neutral attitude towards the use de-escalation techniques.
Discussion: A high proportion of nurses had a personal experience of various forms of patient aggression. The attitude of nurses towards patient aggression affects the choice of attack management strategies, which demonstrates the need for educational programs. Targeted multi-faceted research efforts in this field should be undertaken to further investigate the phenomenon.
