Theoretical and Experiential Approaches of Performance: a case study of Antigoni Gyras
Summary:
The present master thesis explores the history and evolution of the art genre called performance and also analyses one of the artworks by the chorographer Antigoni Gyras, creator/founder of the group Kinitiras. It focuses on the chorotheatric dimension of performance, as it was developed in the 20th century in both Greece and abroad. Moreover, it explores the way that creators/performers borrow elements from everyday life, the way they repeat the selected kinetic code, the role of randomness in the creation of an art project, and the never-ending game between conscious and unconscious, fantasy and reality. The interest lies in the artistic act itself and not on the final result. In the scope of our work the basic tool of a performance is the body and how and what it communicates. The questions are approached based on the threefold chorographer- performer- audience. The boundaries between these people are fluid and there is constant action and interaction. The approach of the performance uses as methodological tools primarily the method of deconstruction and secondarily psychoanalysis and gender studies. As a case study the chorotheatrical group Kinitiras and the work Plektani by Anigoni Gyras is used.
