Summary:
Vocabulary constitutes a basic pillar of language teaching. However, it has remained for many years on the sidelines of the language course. Although significant efforts have been made to improve its position over the past decades, research findings show that they did not have the desired results. Consequently, the need to improve the provision of language education requires the production of modern pedagogical material.
This master thesis focuses on the fourth grade of elementary school and explores whether it is possible, to increase the vocabulary of students and to improve their level of reading comprehension, by using the appropriately shaped pedagogical material whether they are children who have Greek as second or as the first language. Within this context, on the basis of scientific criteria, the pedagogical material of our didactic intervention was shaped, with the ambition to become useful in the teaching context. In addition, several examples are selected with an environmental dimension, which seeks, as a secondary goal, the environmental sensitization along with vocabulary reinforcement.
Based on the principles of intercultural education, the objectives, methodology and content of pedagogical material have been determined, while, at same time, an attempt has been made to render the material attractive, pleasant and, above all, friendly to students. However, it is worth noting that it should be applied in practice in order to assess its effectiveness. Therefore, a pilot application is suggested in order to highlight points that may need improvement, correction or re-shaping.
