Secondary students' perceptions regarding the characteristics of an effective teacher
Summary:
This dissertation aims at exploring the perceptions of secondary school students in connection with the characteristics of an effective teacher. In particular, it attempts to outline the profile of an effective teacher, focusing on three dimensions: Teacher-student relationship, Justice and fairness and Instructional strategies that ensure their active participation in the learning process and enhance their attainment. At the same time, it examines whether students' perceptions differ with respect to gender, grade, and self-identification, in terms of their attainment. The survey was conducted during the school year 2018-2019 at a public school in Athens and 189 students aged 12-15 of the three grades of the Gymnasium participated. The quantitative method and the questionnaire tool which was processed and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 25) was used to examine the topic. The statistical results showed that, in terms of outlining the profile of an effective teacher, students favor Justice and fairness as well as Teacher-student relationship, whereas Instructional strategies come second. In addition, the research revealed a qualitatively different profile of the effective teacher in relation to gender. The same difference was shown comparing Grades A and B. At the same time, there was a significant positive correlation of students' self-identification of their attainment with respect to Teacher-student relationship and Instructional strategies. As the research on the question of secondary school students' perceptions of the effective teacher in Greece is limited, the added value of the study lies in the fact that students are given the opportunity to present their views on a crucial topic for them. This knowledge can help educators to improve their teaching practice and gain a more complete insight of their students' expectations.
