Reinforcing the trials of family system: A therapeutic psychoeducational intervention program for parents of children with ASD.
Summary:
Families of Children with ASD experience high levels of anxiety in their daily lives, which is mainly attributable to the difficulties faced by the child at a social, communicative and behavioral level. Also, the couple's parental role and marital affiliation are directly affected by the presence of the child with ASD in the family (Gena, 2017). Psycho-education refers to a behavioral therapeutic intervention that exploits teaching and psychotherapeutic procedures aimed at informing the family about the disorder as well as teaching communication and problem-solving skills (Tsiouri et al., 2015). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of a psycho-educational intervention program based on the protocol of behavioral therapy of the family developed by Ian Falloon and Liberman (1983) to parents of children with ASD, using qualitative and quantitative method. The participants in the psycho-education group were three pairs of parents of children diagnosed with ASD. The intervention took place during the period of March-December 2018, and 10 two-hour meetings took place. On the basis of the qualitative analysis of parents' reports it appears that through the psycho-education program the parents gained: a) a better understanding of the nature of the ASD, b) better awareness and management of social stigma and self-stigmatization, c) better awareness concerning problems of communication with their family members, d) social networking among members of the team, e) positive experience of participating in the team framework and positive feedback from specialists /therapists. On the basis of the quantitative analysis there was no statistically significant change in: a) the reduction of the family burden, b) the improvement of family functionality and c) the improvement of family habits.
