Secondary school teacher's attitudes towards the subject of Modern greek language. A research of their educational identity in relation to the nature of the language cource, teaching practices and the teacher's roles
Summary:
The purpose of the present research is the investigation of educators’ attitudes towards the subject of Modern Greek Language and how these are reflected on their teaching, as well as the way they perceive Modern Greek Language and the practices they follow when they teach this particular subject.
The conducted research was quantitative, with the use of a structured questionnaire created by the researcher. A number of 110 educators took part in the research, both women and men, most of whom are 41-50 years old, hold a bachelor’s degree in the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology and a master’s degree as well. Moreover, the majority of them have a permanent position in the school where they teach and claim to have a professional experience of 16 to 30 years in the field of Education. The data analysis was conducted using SPSS.25, a statistical software.
The research’s findings showed that educators follow both the traditional grammatical approach and the communicative approach when they teach Modern Greek Language. Findings showed that differences in gender, age or work experience can affect the approach they choose or the dimension of the literacy they put their focus on.
Further investigation is needed in order to generalize the findings, as well as conducting a research using a larger sample of educators that teach in junior high schools and high schools would be recommended.
