Congenital disorders of the large bowel
Summary:
Malrotation is a rare congenital clinical condition. This essay presents the anatomic and embryologic basis of these abnormalities by exploring a number of theories regarding the formation of these conditions during embryogenesis.
In the general part of this essay issues of embryology and surgical anatomy are being discussed. The congenital anomalies of the colon are also analyzed.
The main part of the essay begins with a presentation of the epidemiologic data, the current classification and the most dominant theories regarding the pathogenesis of malrotation of the colon. The clinical presentation and the imaging findings of each type of malrotation are being discussed, along with other congenital abnormalities that may coexist. Finally, therapeutic options are being suggested, especially the surgical ones. The most common techniques are being described along with the associated complications, the postoperative care that is required and the prognosis of these conditions.
The review of the literature revealed 58 cases of colonic malrotation. Aspects such as age, gender and clinical manifestations are being analyzed. The type and location of these anomalies is also discussed along with the presence of other congenital abnormalities. The surgical treatment of these patients is fully described.
The final chapter of the essay presents the conclusions from the statistical analysis of all the data collected.
