Promoting the independence of a child with ASD through the systematic use of an activity schedule at home
Summary:
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have a difficulty in developing self-management skills, as a result they remain dependent on adults. Activity Schedules are an evidence-based method that promote the individual’s autonomy.
The purpose of this study was to promote the autonomy of a 6 years old boy in everyday life skills (clothing, feeding, play) through the use of an activity schedule and to limit the parental involvement. In this home-based intervention the father of the participant was the main therapist. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed through a multiple baseline experimental design across responses. After the introduction of the intervention, there was rapid and dramatic increase in on-schedule behavior and on-task behavior, while the frequency of prompts provided by father had declined dramatically.
