Attitudes and perceptions of primary school teachers on the Roma pupils' bilingualism
Summary:
Roma is an ethnic group with a long history. Originating from India, they started coming over to Europe in the 13th century. Roma’s name is occasionally connected with various superstitions. They speak their own language, the Romani, which is not the official language of a state, although Romani has its own structure and characteristics. All these characteristics along with their non-European origin and their low social and economic position, contributed decisively to the marginalization of the Roma people.
Around 265.000 Roma people live in Greece (ECRI, 2005). However, they were recognized as Greek citizens officially in the 1970s (Parthenis & Frangoulis, 2016). The first care of the State for the education of Roma children was in 1989 with the resolution of the Ministers of Education of the Council of Europe. The importance of the training of teachers who work with Roma children was recognized in 1992 and since 1994 host classes and tutorial departments have been institutionalized.
During the school year 1996-1997, only 2.640 Roma pupils attended Greek schools, but through university programs the number of Roma pupils has increased. An extremely long delay in the care of Roma’s education is observed.
The role of the teacher inside the classroom as the mediator of the state educational design and the practical education is extremely important for shaping the school climate. Teachers’ attitudes and perceptions are able to determine the evolution of Roma children inside and outside school and affect other children’s attitudes and perceptions towards the specific linguistic group.
The present research tries to investigate teachers’ attitudes and perceptions towards Roma pupils’ bilingualism, and how these attitudes are able to affect education in practice, the school course of Roma children and other children’s attitudes towards the Roma pupils.
