Long term compliance with CPAP in patients' with obstructive sleep apnea in northwest Greece
Summary:
CPAP is an extremely effective treatment for OSA, but its effectiveness is based on long-term compliance. The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term compliance as well as the factors that affected compliance. The study included 75 patients diagnosed with OSA, between November 2015 to November 2017, and accepted CPAP therapy. Completion of questionnaire was carried out via telephone interview and additional data were obtained from patients’ files. Factors assessed with compliance were the following: age, gender, the BMI, smoking habits, severity of OSA, symptoms, marital status, devices, and follow-up in the outpatient sleep clinic. We found that 81% of patients continued to use CPAP therapy,7 85±261 days after initiation and 90% stated that they are satisfied with the use of the device. The AHI of the diagnostic study had a statistically significant correlation with long-term compliance with CPAP (p=0.008). There was also a statistically significant correlation between long-term compliance with the use of CPAP and the patient compliance with follow-up visits in our Sleep Clinic (p=0.019). In addition, long-term compliance with CPAP was correlated with reported apnea from the familiar environment (p=0.001).
Our study shows that patient’s long-term compliance with CPAP treatment was satisfactory. Severity of OSA, follow-up visits and increased concern of family member sare key factors for patients’ long-term compliance with CPAP.
