Management of operational processes in health units under hospital information system: Case study
Summary:
The field of healthcare and health in general, consists of complicated procedures. In order to improve the quality and reduce the cost of their services, health service units are trying to modify and automate their procedures based on international standards and medical protocols. This objective can be achieved both through the design of Business Procedures regarding these standards and medical protocols and through the implementation of these procedures through the use of the Information Systems of the respective Health Units.
Work is targeted, because the area of Health is particularly wide and sensitive. Apart from medical care, it includes patient care, care for the prevention and maintenance of the physical and mental health of all people. Thus, in recent years, the necessity of upgrading the services has been intensifying, while reducing costs and facilitating health professionals.
The implementation of the above protocols and standards, however, presents important practical difficulties, both in the process of informing and training the staff, especially in complying with them in a difficult and pressing environment, such as the hospital.
More specifically, the procedures taking place in a clinic are critical and most clinics in Greece have material and human resources deficiencies.
vii
Therefore, it is understood that the administration and management of such procedures is a key issue.
The aim of this work is to examine the improvement of the procedure of the "Mediterraneo Hospital" hospital, introducing a patient to surgery, in order to enhance the information, education, compliance of medical and nursing staff, reduce workload and reduce costs and time.
For the implementation of the proposal, a case study of "Mediterraneo Hospital", where standards of quality have already been developed and implemented, has also been carried out and an integrated Information System is also in operation. It is proposed to incorporate specific standardized procedures into existing Nursing Services Procedures for the introduction of surgical patients either programmed or extraordinary through the use of BPMN Diagrams to capture the current situation as well as the future ('' to be '').
This implementation of the integration of protocols and procedures into the Information System of Mediterraneo Hospital can greatly accelerate staff briefing, facilitate and enhance the implementation of quality standards in Health Units.
