Emergency management at the immigration center's office
Summary:
INTRODUCTION: The experience of immigration and resettlement in a new country is associated with risks to mental and physical health. Recognition and appropriate treatment of mental health problems among young migrants is a challenge due to differences in language and culture and due to specific stressors related to immigration and resettlement.
AIM: To investigate the problems of health and psycho-emotional burden as well as the management of the emergency situations at the Corinth Immigrant Pre-Detention Center.
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional survey was conducted at the Corinth Pre-Detention Center from October to December 2018. The study sample consisted of 90 immigrants who visited the center's office. The sampling method used the sampling of convenience. The data collection was achieved using a structured questionnaire based on the individual medical record. The questionnaire included: (a) demographic data; and (b) the Spielberger weighted questionnaire (STAI I - II), which is used for the measurement of anxiety. The processing and statistical analysis of the data was carried out using the statistical program S.P.S.S. 25 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences).
RESULTS: The mean age of migrants was 27.9 (± 8) years. The majority of the sample (53.3%) came from Pakistan and fewer from countries with war. 63.3% were single. 43.3% of migrants had a family history, 33.3% were not tested for mantoux + virology, and 26.7% had negative mantoux and negative virology. 45.6% smoked and the majority smoked <10 cigarettes a day. Almost 6 out of 10 visited the clinic as an emergency. In terms of anxiety, immigrants were moderately stressed. Specifically, the mean value of anxiety as a condition was 43.68 (± 12.7), while the mean value of anxiety as a personality feature was 38.2 (± 6.9). Age seemed to affect anxiety as a condition, and as age increased, the levels of stress of migrants also increased. On the other hand, nationality, marital status, smoking, and type of incident did not show any statistically significant difference.
CONCLUSIONS: Mental health needs of migrants are increasing over time and the mental health system, therapies and social services need to be adapted to meet these needs. Clinical evaluation and treatment effectiveness can be improved with the use of trained interpreters and mediators
