Food contact materials - Determination of phthalate esters in food simulants using GC-MS
Summary:
Packaging has entered our lives rapidly and consumer concerns have arisen as studies have shown that it is likely that various substances that are intentionally or non intentionally added on the packaging will migrate to the food and might endanger the consumer health. There are several factors that affect the migration of a substance to the food, such as food contact material, physical and chemical properties of the substance, time and temperature conditions that the food containers are stored.
The aim of this investigation is to study the migration of the phthalate esters, a group of substances that are used as plasticizers for packaging materials. The specimens of plastic products were submitted to 10 day migration experiment and the stimulant used, was the vegetable oil . Identification and quantification of the phthalates released were performed using GC-MS instrumentation. The method was applied to samples of different plastic material. In addition, uncertainties for phthalates were calculated using the Nordtest methodology.
