The containing function of institutions
Summary:
This dissertation examines the concept of institution throughout the psychoanalytic literature. The meaning of this ambiguous word depends on the frame of usage. Institutions can either operate protectively as organizational factors for the individuals and carriers of the law in society, either as asylums reinforcing the psychotic part of our identity (Kaës 1988).
Eliott Jaques (1953) underlined another function of institutions. He focused on how they are used by their individual members to reinforce mechanisms of defense against anxiety, and in particular against recurrence of the early paranoid and depressive anxieties.
The psychoanalytic frame can operate as another institution, because the patient can deposit through this process his immobilized, primitive and undifferentiated parts of psyche in order to metabolize them- by the reverie of therapist- in to something more meaningful (Bleger, 2017).
The methodology of this research involves relevant conceptual literature review as well as a case study. The clinical material used for this study derives from the one year psychotherapy process with a patient (from March 2017 to March 2018), in the context of the Master Degree Program «Psychodynamic Psychotherapy in Medical Settings», in the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
