Recognition speed of facial characteristics and autistic characteristics
Summary:
The research studies that have been done so far regarding face recognition and autistic characteristics are few. They mainly focus on the recognition of facial emotional characteristics rather than on trustworthiness or intelligence. The aim of the present study is the probe of reaction time on face recognition in relation to autistic characteristics in neurotypicals. In order for this to be achieved, questionnaire Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) was used. As for face recognition a specific programme was employed in which 240 faces are presented. The results show a tendency of weak positive correlation between the overall reaction time of participants on face recognition and autistic characteristics. However, there was no statistical significance between social skill subscale of AQ and face recognition speed. Furthermore, there was no significant correlation between gender, autistic characteristics and face recognition speed. The findings suggest that the severity of autistic symptoms can greatly affect face recognition which probably are more severe in the case of ASD. It is therefore suggested that if autistic characteristics are an indication of deficient and slow face recognition, be probed.
