Summary:
The main purpose of this dissertation is to explore if the risk management can provide a competitive advantage to a business operation. The thesis comprises of a theoretical and a practical part. Respectively, the literature review section presents an efficient understanding of two key terms, risk management and competitive advantage. The practical part provides insights on whether there is a correlation between operational risk and competitive advantage and on whether the two aforementioned terms are affected both by the number of employees who work in a company and by the industry the company operates. At the end, there is a discussion on the risks that appear more frequently and on the industries those risks appear and if there is any kind of differentiation between the industry and the taking place. The main purpose for me was to shed light on the issue of how a company in Greece, nowadays, could acquire a competitive advantage and in particular, how a competitive advantage could be gained through the theory of Risk Management.
For the theoretical part of this dissertation was used articles and literature from online libraries, and hard copies from existing libraries. Subsequently, for the practical part, 59 managers from different companies answered a questionnaire of 24 questions, which was written in google form file. At the end, the last deduction at the initial questions came up with statistical program SPSS, more specifically, from the comparative analysis result that there is positive correlation between operational risk and competitive advantage. Nevertheless, for the two next questions, it turned out that demographic data aren’t a major influence factor for the two meanings of operational risk and competitive advantage. Ending up, it’s important to point out that there isn’t differentiation between the particular industry and risks which explored in this thesis.
