Summary:
Purpose: The purpose of the present study is to identify and describe the anatomic variations of the blood supply to the left side of colon.
Materials and Methods: A systematic review of the literature has been conducted using Pubmed, Google Scolar and Scopus database. Inclusion criteria were articles written in English language.
Results: The research displayed 109 research articles. All studies were examined by abstract and title, resulting in 15 that meet the criteria. Within these 15 studies, the anatomic variations of the blood supply to the left colon were reviewed out of a total 1028 specimens (patients and cadavers). The majority of classifications, described 4 branching types of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA), being the type I the most common among the others. Conclusions: The presence of anatomic variations, not that many at the root of IMA, but mostly in its branching pattern, are a very important point during colorectal cancer. The right knowledge and perception of blood supply help us achieve oncologic resections with fewer complications (intra- and post-operatively)
