Stress and burden experienced by caregivers of elderly patients requiring treatment at a pathology unit
Summary:
Elderly patients constitute a large percentage of the patients requiring treatment in emergency departments. This patient group, is characterized, among others, by co-morbidities, polypharmacy, atypical illness demonstration, and inability for self-care. Simultaneously, the lack of appropriate infrastructures, social services and support, as well as caregivers’ training, impose increased burden, stress and diminish quality of life.
Aim
The current research examined the stress and burden experienced by caregivers of elderly patients requiring treatment at a pathology unit.
Method
The sample comprised of 130 caregivers of aged patients hospitalized in the pathology unit of “ELPIS” general hospital from October 2017 to October 2018. The administered the ΒΑΚΑS caregiving outcomes scale, the Spielberger State-Trait self-esteem inventory (STAI) and the Linear Analogue Scale Assessment (LASA).
Results
From the statistical analysis of the results the following findings were found: anxiety enlarged as the period of care (p<0,001) and the day care increased (p:0,034), the caregiver had a first degree of affinity with the patient (p: 0,064), the caregiver was unemployed (p:0,023), the patient was younger (p:0,042) and he/she had cancer (p:0,018). The burden of caregivers was higher as the period of care increased (p<0,001), affinity with the patient was first degree (p:0,007) and it was influenced by the activity (p: 0,086) and caregivers’ quality of life (p:0,071 )
Conclusions
Both burden and anxiety aggravated with the increased caregiving time span Moreover a first degree of affinity between the patient and the caregiver and cancer cοmordidity also contributed to this exacerbation. Appropriate interventions may be put in practice to remove some of this load from the caregivers, allowing them, to offer more effective care to their patients.
