Percutaneous Stereotactic Biopsy of Non-palpable Mammographic Lesions versus open breast Biopsy. A retrospective comparison of histological findings.
Summary:
Introduction
Two minimal invasive biopsy methods for non-palpable
mammographic lesions are performed at the Breast Unit of "Agios Savvas" Hospital: the vacuum assisted minimal invasive biopsy method (SenoRx System) and the minimal invasive biopsy method with the use of radiofrequency (BLES system).
The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the pathological findings of speciments excised with the use of minimally invasive biopsy methods (BLES and SenoRx), to those obtained from breast surgeries, in order to evaluate the underestimation rate of these biopsy methods.
Material and Methods
In total, 97 women presented with a non-palpable mammographic lesion, classified as BIRADS ≥4 , underwent a minimally invasive breast biopsy. More precisely, 57 of them were performed with the use of BLES and 40 with the use of SenoRx. The pathological reviews were collected and 43 women underwent a subsequent breast surgery based on the pathological findings of the biopsy speciment. After the operation, the surgery's pathological review was compared to the biopsy review. Furthermore, two women underwent a breast surgery based on suspicious radiological findings, although a bening breast biopsy result was obtained.
Results
Out of the 97 women who underwent a breast biopsy, 45 underwent a subsequent surgical excision of the lesion. After the comparison of the pathological reviews, the underestimation rate for the BLES was estimated to a 20% for the ADH and DCIS and 23% for the DCIS only.
Coclusions
The stereotactic minimally invasive breast biopsy methods for non palpable lesions (SenoRx and BLES), performed at the Hospital "Agios Savvas", could be considered reliable methods for the diagnosis of precursor and malignant breast lesions as their underestimation rates are comparable to the ones found in the literature.
