Resilience and negative life events in Secondary School students

The factors that contribute to resilience in adolescents who have been exposed to negative life events operate across every level of ecological systems. This study explored the correlation between resilience and life events experienced by adolescent students attending Greek schools. The sample consisted of 277 students attending the first and second grade of junior high school and high school (Mean age = 15,03). The Resilience Scale (Wagnild & Young, 1993) and Life Events Questionnaire (Fthenakis & Minsel, 2002) have been used for the purpose of this study. Results indicated that the correlation between resilience, life events and their impact was not found statistically significant. Adolescents whose mothers had Greek origin and those who had suffered a serious illness, injury or surgery reported higher levels of resilience. In addition, adolescents who had experienced family conflicts and maintained dysfunctional relationships with their parents tended to report lower levels of resilience. The findings can be used for designing and implementing effective prevention and intervention programs in schools for adolescents who have experienced negative life events.
