Puerperal psychosis with the attachment theory
Summary:
Post-partum period is a demanding period characterized by overwhelming biological, social and emotional changes. It requires significant personal and interpersonal adaptation, especially in case of prim gravida. Puerperal psychosis (PP) is the most severe form of postnatal psychiatric illness, and women are about 22 times more likely to experience the onset of a manic or psychotic episode in the first postpartum month than at any other time in life. Episodes of PP occur following in the region of 1–2 in 1000 deliveries, and symptom presentation can be dramatic: full‐blown delusions, hallucinations, bizarre behavior, mania, depression, perplexity, confusion, lability and other affective symptoms can develop within days to weeks of childbirth.
Attachment theory (Bowlby., 1969.1988) has become a potent theoretical framework that explains individual differences in socio-emotional development, mental health, and wellbeing across the lifespan. A central feature of attachment theory is the attempt to combine psychological and subjective with biological and objective. The theory of attachment follows a developmental model where the quality of parent relationship in early life affects psychosocial development at all stages of individual development.
The research purpose is to investigate the experience of women with postpartum psychosis associated with the Attachment Style , based on Bowlby's theory. We used information collected from three women who were diagnosed with postpartum psychosis. The results of this study showed that the insecurely attached associated with postpartum psychosis and other parameters like the marital relationship and the socioeconomic status.
