The 1982 Constitution of the Republic of Turkey, as it was amended with the referendum on 16 April 2017. Translation to Greek and translation commentary.
Summary:
Τhe aim of the Master’s Degree Thesis, is the translation to Greek, of the original 1982 Constitution of the Republic of Turkey, as it was amended with the referendum on 16 April 2017, as well as the creation of three (3) tri-lingual glossaries of law terms [(a) source language: TR – target languages: EL, EN, (b) source language: EL - target languages: TR, EN and (c) source language: EN – target languages: TR, EL], so that this Master’s Degree Thesis to achieve a more international character.
The launch for this effort, was that, until today, as far as I know, the original text of the Constitution of the Republic of Turkey has not been translated to Greek and there were no glossaries regarding this issue. The Master’s Degree Thesis material is based on the original text of the 1982 Constitution of the Republic of Turkey, as it was amended with the referendum on 16 April 2017 ( a text of 30.753 words, in 61 pages), which I downloaded, on 2 June 2017, from the official website of the Great National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT).
The translated text is analyzed according to: (a) the linguistic approach of the translation (linguistic levels) of Batsalia & Sella, (b) the translation procedures of J.P.Vinay & J. Darbelnet, and (c) the translational theoretical approach of P. Newmark. The translational options are explained according to the translational procedures of J.P. Vinay & J. Darbelnet and the translational theoretical approach of P. Newmark and comments are written about the translational procedure and the importance of the cultural dimension of the Translation.
Τhe heterogeneity of the Turkish language (an agglutinative language, from the family of the Altaic languages) and the Greek language (a conjugative language from the family of Hindo-European languages) has shown the complexity of the Translation (translation aims at founding the communicative intention of the original text and reproducing that same communicative aim, so as the translated text to have the same impact to potential readers with the one that has the original text to its own readers), the cultural approach of these two languages, the important role of the translator, the translational risks that the translator has to manage (according to Pym), and both the same path and connection that the Science of Translation shares with other similar sciences (Linguistics, Economics, Law: Alternative Dispute Resolution {ADR}).
