Summary:
Aim of this thesis is to look into the didactical approach of fractions and equivalence, proposed by the new textbook of Mathematics of the fifth grade, which was taught for the first time during the school year 2018-2019. Moreover, this thesis assesses the quality of the learning environment and the provided support to the students, through a critical analysis of the chapters concerning these mathematical concepts. More specifically, through the next pages we shall try to answer the following questions: is the philosophy of the new textbook in accordance with the new trends in Didactics of Mathematics? Does the context of the textbook truly follows this philosophy as well as the current research data regarding the most efficient ways of teaching and promoting a deeper understanding of these concepts?
