Intervention evaluation to primary educators for the identification of depressive symptoms in students and support in the classroom: non-randomized study
Summary:
Introduction: Depression often manifests itself during childhood and adolescence. Educators hold a prominent position in identifying symptoms of depression in their students. In order to improve educators' knowledge, an educational guide regarding recognition of these symptoms in students was developed.
Methods: The study was carried out among 48 educators in Primary Education (intervention group n=23, control group n=25) from Tripolis who worked in state schools. The effect of intervention on the participants was evaluated with questionnaires before and after providing them with the educational guide. The questionnaires asessed the knowledge of educators regarding child and adolescent depression.
Results: The use of the educational guide increased the knowledge of the educators in the sample. One third of the sample had never been informed about child and adolescent depression. Most educators stated that they would use the strategies proposed in the guide.
Discussion: The educational guide, which was provided to the educators related to identifying depression symptoms in students and providing them with support, seems to have increased their knowledge.
