The economic burden of Surgical Site Infections in Greek Healthcare Service
Summary:
From the past till now, hospital acquired infections heave great impact
on healthcare systems. Nowadays, among the most research interested hospital
infections are the surgical site ones.
In the present dissertation, we studied the influence of surgical
infections in a public hospital in Attica from financial perspective, considering
their effects on hospital’s budget. Based on Graves et al (2010) theory of Ps
and Qs, we explored the financial impact of surgical site infections on casehospital
budget.
According to our results, the total cost of hospital infections is about
392.637,60€ annually, which equals to 4,13% of hospital’s budget.
Consequently, given the need for improved financial control over public
hospitals’ performance, a variety of measures should be taken, such as accurate
recording, as well as better application of prevention and detection methods of
hospital acquired infections.
To sum up, more research about the cost of hospital infections would
shed light on the financial impact of each type of infection on a hospital’s
expenses.
