The role of the leader in healthcare professionals
Summary:
The concept of leadership has been thoroughly discussed in the world literature through various approaches. The healthcare leaders have to be distinguished by a combination of characteristics for the purposes of the development and the practice of an efficient leadership to their subordinates at the peculiar workplace of a hospital. The theoretical approaches and the positive styles of leadership, which will be discussed in the first chapter, will lead to the respective results that aim to provide high quality services, if and when they are put into practice.
Purpose: This project aims to highlight the theoretical approach of the leader’s role within health professionals/nurses and doctors, as well as the necessity to apply methods that will provide an effective leadership in a healthcare facility.
Material and Methodology: This dissertation was implemented according to a literature review of Greek and foreign literature, mainly established over the last twenty years. The material was sought and derived from international (Pubmed, Medline, Cinahl) and Greek (Iatrotek) electronic databases related to the concepts of leadership, motivation, effective leadership and job satisfaction in healthcare facilities and also from the academic libraries of the Nursing Library of Athens University of Economics and Business and Panteion University of Athens. The material included in the review was determined after the definition of the integration and exclusion criteria.
Conclusions: The leaders ought to be passionate and assertive, and have a motivational influence over their subordinates. The need of evolution in nursing service hierarchy must be supported and evaluated by means of trust and dialogue, so that the competitive environment is avoided. People with innovative ideas, who show love for progress and knowledge and have administrative skills in a healthy workplace, are promoted and pulled ahead accordingly by the nursing service. The leader doctors should strive for the everyday contact and communication with their subordinates, and at the same time, provide sufficient time so that the latter get used to the existing and constantly changing situations. Finally, the posts of supervisors/directors should be filled by people who, apart from the very good knowledge of their subject, must also have a vision, administrative knowledge, leadership and communication skills, and emotional intelligence so that the healthcare leadership is reformed.
