Summary:
The present paper attempts a two-pronged approach of the folktale, on the one hand, over time, as a historical object and on the other hand, at the same time, with reference to the cultural present, through the study of stories told by a group of folktale narrators coming from a village named Phanes and located in the island of Rhodes. It focuses on the promotion of the local narrative tradition and the way that it differs from a global to a national and a local level. Additionally, it focuses on the role that these narratives play in society, not only during previous years but also today. Two research methodologies, known as the historical and the folkloric approaches, were combined (the folk-story material was gathered through extensive on-site research via observing participants, recorded interviews, historic-geographical methodology for the comparative analysis of texts, study of historical sources and local history). The original material, which I collected during a period of five months (January 2018 - June 2018) and consists of the folk tales themselves, as told by each storyteller to the local idiom, was also included in my paper.
This paper also uses basic scientific approaches and theories regarding fairytale and relevant narrative genres. Moreover, there is reference to the origin, the interpretation the special characteristics, the content of fairytale as anthropological and folklore genre and its uses in modern times. Subsequently, the fairytale is being connected with its specific currency areas and there is information on the history, the social and financial conditions, the linguistic idiom, the habits and the past and present of the community; this kind of information was gathered during on-site and bibliographical research. The narratives are classified, analyzed and commented according to catalogue of international tale types (Aarne – Thompson – Uther), the Catalogue of Greek magic folktales (the so-called «Megas Catalogue»). Part of "Megas Catalogue" was published by the Historical Archive of Greek Youth, the national and international bibliography, while at the same time the female narrators themselves contributed significantly with their special approach on the matter. These women are considered the glue linking the oral narrative tradition with the community.
