Development, implementation and evaluation of an educational program for the prevention and coping with Cyberbullying in secondary school students
Summary:
Introduction: Cyberbullying is a serious threat to the public health of students. It is necessary to develop an integrated educational program aimed at knowing the rules of safe internet use, raising awareness of the dangers and consequences of cyberbullying, developing skills to avoid potential offenders and adopting a supportive attitude towards the victims.
Objective: The aim of this semi-experimental study with a non-equivalent screening project is to examine the effectiveness of a program of prevention and coping with cyberbullying in Secondary Education students.
Method / Design: The sample consists of 82 students of the first grade (15-16 years old) from two different public schools in West Attica (intervention group, n = 49 and control group, n = 33). The above sample was given a series of questionnaires before and after the intervention with a 1 month distance. (a) an out-of-date questionnaire examining students' knowledge, attitudes, beliefs / perceptions about the concept of electronic bullying and the skills for safe use of the internet. b) Cyberbullying Intervention Project Questionnaire (ECIPQ) c) Coping with Cyberbullying Questionnaire (CWCBQ) d) an out-of-date questionnaire for the bystanders examining the supportive attitude towards the victim and how to deal with incidents of online bullying.
The experimental group attended 3 training 90 'by the student-teacher, over a 3-week period. The material of the presentations and activities was the collection and synthesis of three sources: a) www.SaferInternet4Kids.gr, b) www.Saferinternet.gr, c) the "We Want" Internet Education We Want, 2013. The control group (18 ') Tagget, Cybersmart - Australian Communications and Media Authority. In both groups, at the end of the intervention, a three-fold brochure was distributed covering most of its units.
Results: Significant changes occurred in almost all variables before and after intervention in the experimental group. The experimental team has increased the knowledge and skills to secure and responsible behaviors in relation to the control group. Also, the experimental team has changed 6 out of 7 strategies to tackle cyber bullying in relation to the control group and significantly reduced cyber-intimidation and cyber-victimization after intervention.
The supportive attitude of the experimental group towards the victim of cyberbullying increased significantly in relation to the control group. Finally, the results show that the more knowledge, better skills for safe internet use, and the development of strategies for coping with the pupils, the less the cyber-victimization is reduced.
Conclusions: The effectiveness of the current curriculum for preventing and coping with cyberbullying can be based on: (a) covering a wide range of modules; (b) taking place in the classroom and without affecting the school curriculum after joining the Social Networks - Security and Internet Protection "of the 1st Lyceum and c) was implemented by educational informatics (could be by another specialty with knowledge of basic IT skills) who knows UV students.
