The relationship between parental involvement with job satisfaction and job burnout in preschool teachers
Summary:
Parental involvement in the educational process has been a controversial research topic in recent years with an increasing interest. Controversial as it contributes positively to learning as well as to teaching while at the same time constitutes a source of stress and burnout for teachers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parental involvement with job satisfaction and job burnout in preschool teachers. The study involved 140 preschool teachers (137 women and 3 men), ranging in age from 21 to 60 years, and their total teaching experience ranged from 2 to 36 years. The participating teachers completed four measuring instruments: a) Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, BFNE, b) Teachers Beliefs Αbout Parental Involvement Scale, c) Job Satisfaction Scale and d) Maslach Burnout Inventory, ΜΒΙ. The results revealed statistically significant differences between the examined variables. Specifically, it was found that parental involvement was positively related to job satisfaction and communication self-esteem of preschool teachers but not to their job burnout. A positive correlation is found only between fear of negative parental evaluation and burnout. Also, the teaching experience, administrative background as well as the degree of parental involvement were found to be positively related to teachers' professional satisfaction, their communicative confidence and sense of personal accomplishment. Whereas, the age of teachers did not show statistically significant differences. The school experience that teachers serve at this time is positively related to parental involvement, the reduced professional status of teachers, and the αποπροσωποποιηση they experience. Finally, statistically significant differences are found between the degree of teachers' professional satisfaction with the factors of burnout and their communication confidence. Where teachers with high professional satisfaction have lower rates of emotional exhaustion and deprivation while at the same time showing high rates of personal achievement. The findings are particularly important in future investigations of the relationship between the variables examined in greater depth but also by different research instruments.
