Perspectives of future teachers on the instructional use of the educational electronic platform ILS (Inquiry Learning Spaces) in biology teaching
Summary:
Although inquiry is not the only teaching method that can be used, it has been shown to increase, in the long run, the learning benefits of students. Despite the fact that the inquiry approach can also be implemented without the help of technology, ICTs with their well-designed integration into the teaching practice contribute substantially to the development of a new learning environment that is conducive to inquiry learning. The Go-Lab (Global Online Science Labs for Inquiry Learning at School) program, which we have chosen to use in this study, is a European-funded research program involving educational communities and research centers from 15 European countries. The Go-Lab Portal includes web workshops and applications organized in an Inquiry Learning Space (ILS). The present study focuses on the perspectives of future teachers on the instructional use of the educational electronic platform (Go-Lab) in biology teaching. The study sample is consisted of 25 students from the Department of Primary Education of the University of Athens. The method of semi-structured interview was chosen for conducting this research and the content analysis method was used for data analysis. The findings have shown that although students generally have a positive attitude towards using the Go-Lab platform, there is a need for training to achieve the essential teaching objective of the platform, that is to promote inquiry learning in Science.
