The calendars of various tribes
Summary:
This thesis analyzes the calendars of two Central American tribes, the Maya and the Aztec. The Aztec culture was influenced by the Maya culture, borrowing a lot of characteristics from them and the calendars are a proof of that influence. For their establishment both races relied on their observations on the periodicity of natural phenomena and the movements of celestial bodies.
Considering the sun’s motion they designed solar calendars based on the tropical year of 365,242 days. They, also, created ritual calendars, as part of them paying tribute to various gods, as well as agricultural, for the various agricultural activities.
There was a correspondence between the number of months, days and weeks as well as with the gods who had their guardians for each of these units of time.
The knowledge of the calendars was possessed by the priest league, who were well educated, with excellent astronomy knowledge and a privileged class in the community of the two tribes.
