Views of Primary Education Teachers on their Intercultural Competence
Summary:
Nowadays Greece, as well as their respective Greek classes as miniatures of the wider society, are multicultural. During the last decades, the scientific world has been advocating for the importance and benefits of interculturalism and intercultural education in particular, with teachers at the center of their position next to all learners. Teachers, today more than ever before, must be intercultural capable of meeting challenges and benefiting all students without exception. Their educational philosophy, their personality, their abilities should be in line with the principles of intercultural education. In addition, it is vital to have knowledge of identity construction, the meaning and significance of the cultural background, the differences between multiculturalism and interculturalism, minorities and their place in Greek society, the significance and consequences of social stigma. Furthermore, by studying the course of educational policies for the educational management of multiculturalism, it will be easier to highlight the importance of the intercultural approach for people individually, but also for society and its subsequent functioning.
The present study aimed to study the intercultural competence of primary education teachers in areas of Athens where there are many students from other cultural backgrounds. In particular, research has shown that teachers are positive about cultural diversity. They want and are trying to adapt their lesson to the needs of the particular learners, while at the same time benefiting all students. However, this is done at a moderate level with many teachers admitting that they do not take appropriate action at all. Everyone recognizes the importance of intercultural education and wants to be educated, more specifically on topics related to teaching in practice, such as teaching methodology and team dynamics and management.
