The quality of life and the functionality of forensic patients under Article 69 of the Criminal Code, in relation to the type of Mental Health Unit in which they are hospitalized
Summary:
In the present research, a study is being carried out on the mentally ill, for whom in accordance with the provisions of Article 69 of the Criminal Code of Greece, they have been placed in the Attica Psychiatric Hospital as a measure to secure their treatment (forensic patients)
The purpose of the research study was to investigate the psychopathology, the quality of life and the functionality of forensic patients under Article 69 of the Criminal Code of Greece, in relation to the type of Mental Health Unit in which they are hospitalized. The research hypotheses, which were investigated and correlated in the present study, initially concerned the rates of positive and negative syndrome in schizophrenia and the comparison of the three subgroups with each other; and subsequently the quality of life and functionality of the forensic patients during their hospitalization in the Internal and External Mental Health Structures of the Psychiatric Hospital of Athens.
In the present research study, the content structure consists of two parts, the theoretical part and the research part. The theoretical part includes the scientifically documented psychopathological approach, as well as the legal framework governing forensic patients. The research part lists the material (PANSS Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale - PANSS, Quality of Life Assessment Questionnaire - WHOQOL-100) and the methodology followed (SPSS statistical package ...?, p-value <0.05) and more of that, it is been presenting the outcomes, which emerged from the individual correlations. In the survey’s sample, which was consisted of 63 people (chronic / acute psychiatric departments: 66.7%, psychosocial rehabilitation / boarding houses: 33.3%), the mean age was 53 years and the mean time of hospitalization was 16 years. Regarding the correlations between PANSS positive and negative subscale, in relation to all WHOQOL-BREF subscales, statistically significant negative correlations emerged, which found that worsening symptomatology had a negative effect on the quality of life of psychiatric patients. In terms of self-assessment of their health, differences are found in relation to the physical health scale, the environmental scale, the overall quality of life assessment and the overall health assessment. In addition, patients who have not had any health problems lately have a statistically significantly higher mean in the subclinical physical health, social relationships, overall quality of life assessment and overall health assessment. Finally, in terms of years of hospitalization, a statistically significant negative correlation was found between years of hospitalization and scores on the subscale overall health assessment.
In the conclusions of the study and as it is found, the demographic characteristics of the patients were not found to affect perceived quality of life, it appears that the patients in psychosocial rehabilitation units were statistically significantly less important than their psychopathologists in relation to their psychopathology of internal patients. In addition, patients treated in psychosocial rehabilitation units evaluated their quality of life more positively in terms of personal relationships, physical and mental health, environment, compared to those treated in internal units.
