Summary:
The present master degree thesis focuses on the examination of local varieties and the products produced by them, as a means of highlighting the cultural identity of their country of origin, as well as on the design and implementation of an educational cultural program on the case of «Naxos Citrus».
Local varieties were created in specific areas by wild life that was domesticated by humans and spread to other places, where they were adapted to new environments using different cultivation techniques. But they do not only refer to their plants and products, but also include the knowledge of the local communities that they acquired from their cultivation and use, as well as the history and culture they created in turn. This dynamic population of local varieties with varied and qualitative characteristics is sought after, resulting in their production and processing contributing to the economic and cultural development of various sites.
The design and implementation of this educational program aims at highlighting the cultural dimension of local varieties and their transformations, through acquaintance with a traditional local product of Naxos, derived from the local variety of citrus on the island, which has been identified with the nutritional and gastronomic culture that has defined it, highlighting the power of the local brand and becoming recognizable by its reputation and crade as the liquor «Naxos Citrus».
Through an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach to the implementation of a project as well as through ongoing research, interviews, experiential activities and group-based teaching methods, fifth grade elementary school students are introduced to the content of Tangible Cultural Heritage.
They approach the local variety of «citrus in Naxos» as an element of material and Intangible Culture, and in particular of the traditional local product of liquor «Naxos Citrus», identified with the name of the island that derives from it. In addition, efforts are being made to promote traditional local produce, which contributes to sustainability.
