Summary:
The current thesis which was composed in the context of the postgraduate program of Greek-Roman and Greek-Italian studies, has as purpose the study of the writer-phenomenon, Elena Ferrante, the qualitative and the computational analysis of her work’s characters, L’amica geniale, which is the first book of the Neapolitan Novels. Through this study, the reader will be confronted with the mystery which is hidden behind the nickname “Elena Ferrante” and will understand the reasons why she has concerned, in these recent years, her reading audience – and not only – with her personality and her written works. The historical background concerns Naples of 1950. The socio-political, the economic situation, the educational system and the role of the woman are considered as the main topics of our study. However, there is particular interest in qualitative but mainly computational analysis of her books’ characters, where by the help of charts and special software, the project will be also approached by the “distant reading” method.
