Summary:
the present thesis work is on the papal portraits of the years 1946-1971 by Francis Bacon, which draw inspiration from and are directly dependent on the portrait of Velazquez Pope Innocent X. We attempted a categorization of the works, which are studied over time, by the scholars, in order to understand the importance of the artist's contribution and the grandeur of the undertaking he undertook. His hectic life and his caustic personality could not be undermined in the context of this study, as was his influence on other artists. Reference is also made to sitting papal portraiture in the 16th and 17th centuries, but also to England during World War II, and it is important to mention the artist's artistic process, especially the collection of photographic material.
