Women in classical era ( Sparta- Macedonia)
Summary:
Women in classical era
Sparta- Macedonia
More often than not women have played a significant role in the function of human societies. Due to their allocation in social “field”, women have been upgraded in previous historical times while they have been degraded in others. Even in the classical period, woman appears inferior to men. This assignment presents the miscellaneous life of both Spartan and Macedonian women.
To begin with, the education of Spartan women is based on physical exercise. Athletics endow these women with their great appearance and allow them to give birth to healthy children. Afterwards, the strange marital ceremony is described and also the expression of feelings and bonds between family members. Adultery doesn’t exist and the absence of men drives women to homosexual relationships. Spartan women emphasize the religious feeling by participating in the local worship ceremonies. Moreover, they have rights on parental dowry.
On the other hand, Macedonian women receive education similar to the Athenian women. The house ( or “ oikos”) is the space of authority for these women and their lifegoal is the raising of their children. Marriage is arranged by male family members and especially for kings it is synonym to alliance. Even if Macedonian women are brought up to be discreet, regal women of Argead dynasty seem to reverse this common perception. This occurs by interfering in the regal succession. Moreover, the religious emotion is as strong as the belief in magic.
In conclusion, Spartan women seem to have a very discrete treatment from other women in Ancient Greek world. On the other hand, the education of Macedonian women is similar to the education of women from other parts of Greece. However, there are some differences. All things considered, the goals of social systems make both Spartan and Macedonian women seemingly liberal women.
