Study on the effect of specific therapeutic manipulations on the clinical and functional parameters of a patient with carpal tunnel syndrome. Case study
Summary:
One of the most common upper limb injuries is caused by the stress that the median nerve is put under, in the carpal tunnel area, known as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) . The reasons that this injury is caused, vary significantly.
CTS treatment might be conservative or surgical. The studies which have been carried out, concerning the rehabilitation of carpal tunnel syndrome via hand therapy procedure are few and patient samples are insufficient. Hand therapy contributes to the increase of median nerve mobility and improves the carpal joint mobility also as well.
This particular case study examines in what extent the hand therapy offers symptom diminution to a 53 years old patient by mobilizing the median nerve and the carpal bones. Twenty four sessions were carried out in the course of eight weeks, three times a week. The control group was the previous assessed points. The measurements were carried out in the first session and after the end of the last one, after eight weeks of rehabilitation.
The results showed an important reduction of the symptoms and great improvement in the function of the upper limb according to the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire. On the other hand, there was no big difference in the electrophysiological measurements.
